미국 래퍼 Kendrick Lamar(켄드릭 라마)는 데뷔하고 단 2년 만에 스타 뮤지션 대열에 들었다. 데뷔는 꽤 오래 전에 했지만 음악계의 주목을 받은 것은 1, 2년 사이에 이뤄졌다.

 

다수의 매체와 시상식에서 "올해의 신인"에 선정됐고 앨범은 날개 돋친 듯 팔려 나갔다. 그가 주류 시장에 입성했을 때 일렉트로닉 댄스음악이 막강한 영향력을 행사하던 시기였기에 그의 약진은 더 돋보였다. 이내 서부 힙합 신의 유망주, 갱스터 랩 부흥의 핵 등의 수식이 따라붙었다.

1987년 캘리포니아주 컴튼(Compton)에서 Kendrick Lamar Duckworth라는 이름으로 태어난 그는 Tupac의 'California Love'(1995)를 보고 감명받아 힙합 뮤지션이 되기를 꿈꿨다. 이후 K-Dot라는 예명으로 첫 믹스테이프 [Youngest Head Nigga In Charge (Hub City Threat: Minor Of The Year)](2003)를 발표해 음악계의 문을 두드렸고, 믹스테이프가 로컬 신에서 어느 정도 관심을 얻음으로써 캘리포니아주의 인디 레이블 톱 도그 엔터테인먼트(Top Dawg Entertainment)와 계약하게 된다. 이어 레이블 동료들과 협연하고 [Training Day](2005), [C4](2009) 등의 믹스테이프를 출시하며 활발히 활동했다.
